Spelling Terminology and Definitions
Phonological Awareness-
It is the awareness of the different speech sounds, including phonemes, syllables and rhymes.
Phonemes-
The smallest unit of speech. e.g. shop = sh / o / p
Syllables -
Is a unit of pronunciation which contains one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants forming the whole or part of a word. e.g. water = 2 syllables wa/ter and inferno has 3 syllables in/fer/no
Syllables juncture-
The point of shift from one syllable to another within a word. e.g. athlete = ath / lete
Blends -
Also known as a consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together. It is important to note that each sound may be heard in a blend. e.g bridge = string, stand = stand
Consonant Digraphs -
These are two consonant letter that represent one phoneme. These can occur at the beginning, middle or end of a word.
Beginning = chew,
Middle = feather
End = rash
Diphthongs-
The sound produced by one vowel which glides into another vowel. e.g. shouted and boil

Activity
