Week 2 Activities
- On P18 Banjo gets into trouble for using the word “dunny”. This is an example of an Australian colloquialism. Write a definition of the word colloquialism and then compile a list of ten further Australian colloquialisms, along with their definitions or real meaning.
- Why do you think Mr Palmer reacted to Banjo’s request to go to the “dunny” in the way he did? Think about the experiences Mr Palmer may have had during WW1. Find out what PTSD is. Do you think Mr Palmer may be suffering from this condition? Why? What (if any) symptoms does he have?
- In Chapter 5 “The Grenade” the boys decided to throw Dafty’s hand grenade over the cliffs at West End. Find a map of Rottnest Island and calculate how many kilometres they would have had to ride their bikes from Thompson Bay to West End and back. Then list three reasons why you think the boys chose to detonate the grenade where they did.
- Finding the Japanese military rifle and helmet placed Banjo and Jack in something of a “dilemma”. In your own words describe what a dilemma is and why Jack and Banjo find themselves in one. Write a short paragraph describing a dilemma that you have found yourself in. How did you resolve this dilemma?
- On P30 Jack is worried that he might end up being sent to Fremantle Prison and fed on bread and dripping for the rest of his life. Do some research into the history of Freemantle Prison. When was it built? Who built it? Why was it deemed necessary to build a prison in Fremantle? Who was Moondyne Joe? Why did he become one of Fremantle Prison’s most notorious inmates.
